They made headlines even when they weren’t trying. But now Jenna and Barbara Bush are finally talking. The 22-year-old twin daughters of President Bush have given their first interview.

My son Geordi is a rather spirited boy. Very little holds his attention for long. He spends most of his spare time thinking up new ways to scare me half to death. Like the time he decided to “surf” on a tiny plastic table that was meant to hold a few drinks rather than a six-year-old boy. Or when he came up with a new magic trick that included making his older sister disappear. Geordi had just begun learning about the ocean in school and was surprisingly fascinated(迷住了) by it. We lived in Delaware, so any discussion about the ocean usually included horseshoe crabs.

The world’s rainforests cover less than ten percent of the earth’s surface, but contain over forty percent of all plant and animal species,. The biggest rainforest is in South America, it’s called the Amazon.
The Amazon is by far the largest remaining rainforest area left on our planet. It’s about 6 to 7 million square kilometers. It’s about two-thirds the size of the United States including Alaska. It’s enormous. Sixty percent of it is in Brazil, but the rainforest also extends into Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, French Guiana and Surinam. And amazingly each year the Amazon provides twenty percent of the world’s fresh water. Here you can find at least 60-70 thousand plant species and at least 3 thousand species of fresh water fish. And more monkeys than you find anywhere else on earth. In Brazil alone nine new species of monkeys have been identified over the last year.
But many of those species, known and unknown, are destroyed every day. Constant logging, mining and cattle ranching are stripping the jungles clean.
“We’ve already lost well over 50 percent of the rainforest that existed at the turn of the last century. And if present situations continue we stand to lose a very large percentage of the life forms that share the planet with us. ” Scientists like Dr. Mittermeier and Conservation International are trying to make a difference. “The most important thing that our organization does is working with local people, with local communities to demonstrate(展示) that conservation can provide benefits to local people, to local communities.” This in turn helps government officials to become aware of the amazing aspects of the Amazon, including the discovery of some of the most incredible creatures known to man.

Percy Julian had helped million suffering from the pain of arthritis. These men and others should be as easily recognized as Bell, Edison and Salk.
America is made up of many different kind of cultures. These cultures have come to enrich the American way of life. We should not think, because history has neglected(疏忽) to include the background of a particular culture, these people have an inferior history. We should understand each of the cultures and learn of their specific contribution to America’s life story.
